What Is Revenue Operations (RevOps)?
Revenue Operations—or RevOps—is the function within an organization that looks at how customers are attracted to a product or solution, how they move through the customer lifecycle, and how that experience translates into the internal systems and processes that support them.
In simpler terms, RevOps helps Marketing, Sales, and Customer Success work as one connected system.
Revenue growth is ultimately the outcome. But successful RevOps isn't just about increasing revenue. It's about building the internal infrastructure that enables an organization to deliver a consistent, seamless customer experience while providing employees with the information they need to do their jobs effectively.
Think About Your Last Visit to the Doctor
Have you ever gone to a doctor's office and experienced something like this?
You fill out a form explaining why you're there.
Then the nurse asks you the same questions you just answered on the form.
The doctor walks in and asks you again.
And when you return for your next appointment, the receptionist asks for information you've already provided.
Every person may be doing their job correctly, but the overall experience feels disconnected.
That's an information problem—and it's a great way to understand why RevOps matters.
Customers can experience the same thing when interacting with a company. They provide information to Marketing, repeat it to Sales, and then have to explain everything again when they're handed off to Customer Success.
From the customer's perspective, they aren't interacting with three separate departments. They're interacting with one company.
The information should move with them.
RevOps Connects the Customer Journey
RevOps helps ensure that the systems, processes, and data behind Marketing, Sales, and Customer Success are connected.
That can include tools such as HubSpot or Salesforce for CRM, Salesloft for sales engagement, Gong for conversation intelligence, learning management systems for education and onboarding, and ChurnZero for customer success.
But RevOps isn't simply about implementing technology.
The real question is: How should information travel through these systems so that both the customer and the employees supporting them have what they need at every stage?
When a prospect becomes a sales opportunity, Sales shouldn't have to reconstruct everything Marketing already learned.
When that customer moves from Sales to Customer Success, the Customer Success team shouldn't have to start from scratch.
Each department should get what it needs while also paying it forward to the next department.
That's where good RevOps becomes incredibly valuable.
Why I Love RevOps
I developed a love for RevOps after working in Marketing, then Sales, followed by a brief stint in Customer Success.
Working across those functions gave me an appreciation for what each department needs from its systems—and what the next department needs from them.
That's the part of RevOps I enjoy most: figuring out how to make a system work for the entire organization rather than optimizing one department in isolation.
A great Marketing system shouldn't just work for Marketing.
A great Sales process shouldn't stop working once the contract is signed.
And Customer Success shouldn't have to piece together a customer's history after the handoff.
The goal is to create connected systems where information flows naturally across the entire customer lifecycle.
When those systems work well, employees spend less time searching for information, customers have a better experience, and the organization has a stronger foundation for revenue growth.
That's RevOps.
I’d love to connect with others who are thinking about these same RevOps challenges. How is your organization connecting Marketing, Sales, and Customer Success? Let’s have a conversation.
